Any U. Joe Votel, who served as head of U. Central Command and U. Public horror and outrage fueled a years-long U. A military presence remains in Iraq, but Biden ordered the combat mission to end this year.
But he said any military operations are likely to focus more narrowly on specific targets there, rather than trying to solve conditions in the country that created them. The U. Over-the-horizon capabilities, the airstrikes carried out from distant bases, are now the first line of defense, mainly because military options are otherwise limited following the withdrawal.
Austin told the Senate that the military's use of over-the-horizon strikes is fairly common and effective. He pointed to a September airstrike in Syria that the Pentagon said killed an al-Qaida terrorist leader. But Retired Gen. John Allen, now the president of the Brookings Institution, said that type of intelligence is crucial for such operations.
The last U. After receiving conflicting intelligence about the home being used by ISIS-K for a planned attack drawn from video captured by six Reaper drones watching from above, a strike team located abroad launched a Hellfire missile that killed an aid worker as well as seven children.
During the war against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, the presence of special operators on the ground was key to targeting the enemy. But the withdrawal and the loss of the Kabul airport and Bagram airport, one of the most capable and advanced in the region, has hobbled the ability to insert troops if needed and has put any U.
Iran airspace is a no-go for the military, and Allen said Russian President Vladimir Putin will likely try to block any attempts by the U. But Islamabad may feel pressure to ally with the Taliban government in Afghanistan, leaving access an open and troubling question as its relationship with the U.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby declined to say whether arrangements have been made with Pakistan for the U. I respectfully suggest you ask yourself this question: If we had been attacked on September 11, , from Yemen instead of Afghanistan, would we have ever gone to war in Afghanistan — even though the Taliban controlled Afghanistan in ? We succeeded in what we set out to do in Afghanistan over a decade ago. Then we stayed for another decade. It was time to end this war. This is a new world.
The terror threat has metastasized across the world, well beyond Afghanistan. The fundamental obligation of a President, in my opinion, is to defend and protect America — not against threats of , but against the threats of and tomorrow.
That is the guiding principle behind my decisions about Afghanistan. I simply do not believe that the safety and security of America is enhanced by continuing to deploy thousands of American troops and spending billions of dollars a year in Afghanistan. But I also know that the threat from terrorism continues in its pernicious and evil nature.
Our strategy has to change too. We will maintain the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan and other countries. As Commander-in-Chief, I firmly believe the best path to guard our safety and our security lies in a tough, unforgiving, targeted, precise strategy that goes after terror where it is today, not where it was two decades ago.
And we can do both: fight terrorism and take on new threats that are here now and will continue to be here in the future. To me, there are two that are paramount. And second, we must stay clearly focused on the fundamental national security interest of the United States of America. This decision about Afghanistan is not just about Afghanistan. Moving on from that mindset and those kind of large-scale troop deployments will make us stronger and more effective and safer at home.
And for anyone who gets the wrong idea, let me say it clearly. To those who wish America harm, to those that engage in terrorism against us and our allies, know this: The United States will never rest. We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down to the ends of the Earth, and we will — you will pay the ultimate price. And let me be clear: We will continue to support the Afghan people through diplomacy, international influence, and humanitarian aid.
But the way to do that is not through endless military deployments, but through diplomacy, economic tools, and rallying the rest of the world for support. My fellow Americans, the war in Afghanistan is now over. When I was running for President, I made a commitment to the American people that I would end this war.
It was time to be honest with the American people again. We no longer had a clear purpose in an open-ended mission in Afghanistan.
But as warfare has evolved, so has the role of Infantry. How much fun is it to train on so many different skillsets? These Soldiers will be introduced to all weapons used by the Infantry: the M4 carbine rifle.
Grenade launcher. Squad automatic weapon. MB machinegun. As well as grenades, mines and demolitions, and anti-tank weapons. Infantry Soldiers train to fight on not just the traditional battlefield, but also the urban landscape; as well as environments exposed to nuclear, biological, and chemical arms.
Armored vehicles such as the Stryker and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle are incorporated to simulate real-world ops. Similarly, helicopters—so critical to force mobility—are also utilized. For 11C, how do you balance urgency and accuracy? The Infantry of today does not just patrol. Fighting positions for vehicles and personnel must be constructed and camouflaged. Fortifications, barriers, and other obstacles must be built or emplaced. There will be recon missions that require Infantry support.
For Indirect Fire Infantry units, the ability to rapidly establish and fire their man-portable or vehicle-borne mortar is key. They know team members down range are depending on them to bring their firepower to the fight, and the rounds they rain down may decide the day. For many members of the Infantry, all of this begins a pattern of continued personal growth; advanced schools such as Airborne, Pathfinder, Sniper, Ranger, and even Special Forces, may lie along that path. Generation after generation, America has depended on them to be her strength in war—her deterrent in peace.
