Father which art in heaven

De Thou art the high and lofty One, who inhabiteth eternity, whose name is holy. Isa The preface, Our Father who art in heaven. Before we come to our business, there must be a solemn address to him with whom our business lies; Our Father.

Intimating, that we must pray, not only alone and for ourselves, but with and for others; for we are members one of another, and are called into fellowship with each other. We are here taught to whom to pray, to God only, and not to saints and angels, for they are ignorant of us, are not to have the high honours we give in prayer, nor can give favours we expect.

We are taught how to address ourselves to God, and what title to give him, that which speaks him rather beneficent than magnificent, for we are to come boldly to the throne of grace. We must address ourselves to him as our Father, and must call him so.

He is a common Father to all mankind by creation, Mal ,Ac He is in a special manner a Father to the saints, by adoption and regeneration Eph ,Ga ; and an unspeakable privilege it is. Thus we must eye him in prayer, keep up good thoughts of him, such as are encouraging and not affrighting; nothing more pleasing to God, nor pleasant to ourselves, than to call God Father.

Christ in prayer mostly called God Father. If he be our Father, he will pity us under our weaknesses and infirmities Ps , will spare us Mal , will make the best of our performances, though very defective, will deny us nothing that is good for us, Lu We have access with boldness to him, as to a father, and have an advocate with the Father, and the Spirit of adoption.

When we come repenting of our sins, we must eye God as a Father, as the prodigal did Lu ,Jer ; when we come begging for grace, and peace, and the inheritance and blessing of sons, it is an encouragement that we come to God, not as an unreconciled, avenging Judge, but as a loving, gracious, reconciled Father in Christ, Jer As our Father in heaven: so in heaven as to be every where else, for the heaven cannot contain him; yet so in heaven as there to manifest his glory, for it is his throne Ps , and it is to believers a throne of grace: thitherward we must direct our prayers, for Christ the Mediator is now in heaven, Heb Heaven is out of sight, and a world of spirits, therefore our converse with God in prayer must be spiritual; it is on high, therefore in prayer we must be raised above the world, and lift up our hearts, Ps Heaven is a place of perfect purity, and we must therefore lift up pure hands, must study to sanctify his name, who is the Holy One, and dwells in that holy place, Le From heaven God beholds the children of men, Ps , And we must in prayer see his eye upon us: thence he has a full and clear view of all our wants and burdens and desires, and all our infirmities.

It is the firmament of his power likewise, as well as of his prospect, Ps Queen of peace, pray for us. Hail, Joseph, spouse and companion of the Mother of God. Hail, Joseph, friend of angels. Hail, Joseph, believer in miracles. Hail, Joseph, follower of dreams. Hail, Joseph, lover of simplicity. Hail, Joseph, exemplar of righteousness; Hail, Joseph, model of meekness and patience; Hail, Joseph, model of humility and obedience.

Blessed are the eyes that have seen what you saw. Blessed are the ears that have heard what you heard. Blessed are the arms that have embraced what you embraced. Blessed is the lap that has held what you held. Blessed is the heart that has loved what you loved.

Blessed is the Father who chose you; Blessed is the Son who loved you: Blessed is the Spirit who sanctified you. Blessed is Mary, your spouse, who honored and loved you. Blessed is the angel who guarded and led you. And blessed be forever all who remember and honor you.

I believe these and all the truths which the holy Catholic Church teaches, because Thou hast revealed them, Who canst neither deceive nor be deceived. O My God, relying on Thy infinite goodness and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Thy grace and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. O my God, I love Thee above all things with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all good and worthy of all love.

I love my neighbor as myself for love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and I ask pardon for all whom I have injured. O Father, raise up among Christians abundant and holy vocations to the priesthood, who keep the faith alive and guard the blessed memory of your Son Jesus through the preaching of his word and the administration of the Sacraments, with which you continually renew your faithful. Grant us holy ministers of your altar, who are careful and fervent guardians of the Eucharist, the sacrament of the supreme gift of Christ for the redemption of the world.

Call ministers of your mercy, who, through the sacrament of Reconciliation, spread the joy of your forgiveness. Grant, O Father, that the Church may welcome with joy the numerous inspirations of the Spirit of your Son and, docile to His teachings, may she care for vocations to the ministerial priesthood and to the consecrated life.

Sustain the Bishops, priests and deacons, consecrated men and women, and all the baptized in Christ, so that they may faithfully fulfill their mission at the service of the Gospel. This we pray through Christ our Lord.

Mary, Queen of Apostles, pray for us. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love.

Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light.

Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Lord, make me a channel of thy peace, that where there is hatred, I may bring love; that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness; that where there is discord, I may bring harmony; that where there is error, I may bring truth; that where there is doubt, I may bring faith; that where there is despair, I may bring hope; that where there are shadows, I may bring light; that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted; to understand, than to be understood; to love, than to be loved. For it is by self-forgetting that one finds. It is by forgiving that one is forgiven. It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life. Lord, Father all-powerful and ever-living God, I thank You, for even though I am a sinner, your unprofitable servant, not because of my worth but in the kindness of your mercy, You have fed me with the Precious Body and Blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

I pray that this Holy Communion may not bring me condemnation and punishment but forgiveness and salvation. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in the power to do good. May it be my strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impulses, bodily and spiritual. May it unite me more closely to you, the One true God, and lead me safely through death to everlasting happiness with You.

And I pray that You will lead me, a sinner, to the banquet where you, with Your Son and holy Spirit, are true and perfect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy, gladness without end, and perfect happiness to your saints. May God the Father who made us bless us.

May God the Son send his healing among us. Remember though that it is a teaching tool not a magical saying that can influence God differently than any other prayer from our hearts. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Matthew - "This, then, is how you should pray: " 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Heaven is the place where the angelic beings surround the throne of God Ps. The kingdom of heaven, as we have seen, is the realm where God is present, where he rules, with all of his glory.

It is the realm where all of the benefits we may have received from him are generate. This is the primary sense in which Our Lord used the term. He identifies God in the same ways many times elsewhere.

So the Father is in heaven. Heaven is also the place to which the Lord brings believers. We are now in the heavenly places, and one day, at the resurrection, we shall be there fully and perfectly.

God raised us up with Christ, and seated us with Christ in the heavenlies This is to show us the extravagance of his gifts.

Thus Paul says of us we already are in the heavenly places receiving now the blessings of God through our union with Jesus Christ Whenever the gospel is preached, not only earthly creatures like us hear and are affected, but heavenly ones as well. The heavenlies are also a work in progress.

Not everything that will be settled in the new heavens and new earth is now already settled. The thought is astonishing: whenever the gospel is preached, not only earthly creatures like us hear and are affected, but heavenly ones as well. And significantly, we believers are doing battle not chiefly against visible forces, but against heavenly powers We must be careful neither to minimize this teaching, nor over-dramatize it.

On the one hand, many Christians do not take the supernatural seriously, and do not calculate its reality into their worldview.
