What was instagram created for

Instagram is the largest-growing social-media platform. It was a success right from the beginning with over a million users only two months after it was launched. Systrom was working in marketing and started doing engineering at night to help him learn how to code. Adam has been at Facebook for more than ten years. He was design director for Facebook's mobile apps and then moved into product management where he led the News Feed product and engineering teams for many years.

He was Head of News Feed prior to joining Instagram where he oversaw product before managing the entire organization.

It started out as … Burbn. Kevin Systrom, the creativity researcher Keith Sawyer explains, was a fan of Kentucky whiskeys. So when he created a location-based iPhone app—one driven by the success of networking app Foursquare—he named it after the booze. The app was complicated, but it took Systrom just a few months to build: Burbn let users check in at particular locations, make plans for future check-ins, earn points for hanging out with friends, and post pictures of the meet-ups.

Burbn was not, however, terribly successful. The app was too complicated, Sawyer points out, and had "a jumble of features that made it confusing. He paid attention to how people were using it. He brought on another programmer, Mike Krieger; the pair used analytics to determine how, exactly, their customers were using Burbn.

He soon came up with his own app called Burbn. An app that would enable users to check-in their location. Soon at a party, meeting his friends working from VC firms, Systrom got them to discuss Burbn. Now was the time to hire a team and Mike Krieger was the first to fall in. They stripped the app of all features except uploading photos, commenting and liking it.

And so it was called Instagram as people were sending a sort of instant telegram. From a handful of users, it soon went on becoming the number one photography app making over , users in just one week and then increasing it to a million in 2 months.

According to Systrom, the app only took 8 weeks to build and was soon acquired by Facebook at a billion in Learnings Know when to Quit There are several cases where people quit their job to start their own business and end up with a bad career and a failed startup. The point here is to be careful and know when to quit your job.
