The Wartburg Festival of , organised by the student fraternities, celebrated the achievements of Luther, the Reformation and the Battle of Leipzig. It was the first popular declaration of sentiment for a unified and independent nation state. Wartburg Castle was the setting for all of these crucial points in German history — as a mighty fortress and splendid residence and as a place of safety, shelter and retreat for its inhabitants through centuries past.
Throughout its history the castle has always remained relevant. However, the buildings were only renovated and redecorated in the 19th century, when the medieval architecture was restored and supplemented in parts by new additions.
The outstanding example illustrating the concept of art in the 19th century is without doubt the ceremonial hall in the main castle building palas , which now provides an amazing backdrop for the famous Wartburg concerts during the summer season as well as a number of other events. The earliest building in the enclosure was a dwelling between the north and south towers. Soon afterwards a keep was added, to form a three-towered castle.
The ground-plan is rectangular, with halls and square corner rooms. On the second floor is the Feast or Banqueting Hall. The architectural ornament is of very high quality and is of Lower Rhenish origin, having parallels with the double chapel at Schwarzrheindorf near Bonn third quarter of the 12th century. The ground-floor has three pairs of double arches; the first floor has three groups of five smaller arches on paired colonnettes, while the third storey has four quadruple arcades with two twin round-arched arcades to the south.

Wartburg Castle is on the southwestern outskirts of Eisenach, on a road called the Wartburgallee. It's about 4 km or 2. By car: If you're driving, follow the street signs for Wartburg. From the A4 Autobahn, you'll want the "Eisenach-Ost" exit. As you leave the city, bear right on the Wartburgallee just after the Reuter Wagner Museum.
Be careful not to continue on the B19, which leads to Mariental. Follow the winding road to the castle and and park in the public lot. In summer, the lot may be crowded, and you'll need to pay for parking. By public transportation: You can save time and avoid parking hassles by taking a city bus from Eisenach's city center or from the bus station in front of the Hauptbahnhof main railroad station.
The Luthershuttle offers a "hop on, hop off" service to Wartburg Castle and other locations around Eisenach. Once you've arrived at the Wartburg Castle parking lot by car or bus, you'll need to follow the paved path uphill. Take a moment to enjoy the views from the scenic overlook before entering the castle. A free shuttle bus is available for elderly and handicapped visitors.
It is not intended for people who simply dislike walking. On summer days in good weather, children can ride to the castle on donkeys for a fee. Look for the donkey station or Eselstation along the road just after the parking lot. During the summer, Wartburg attracts more than 3, visitors per day. To avoid crowds and waiting lines for tours in high season, it's best to visit on a weekday preferably early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
The Romantik Hotel auf der Wartburg is an historic and upscale inn and wedding venue next to the castle. The path is about meters long, and although it's a little steep in places, it's easy enough to climb or descend as long as the pavement isn't icy.
If you're elderly, infirm, or handicapped, you can take a free shuttle from the parking lot to the castle entrance. An entrance bridge and tunnel lead into the castle courtyard.
